Modern Immigrant Experience

Introduction

For this paper, I have been assigned to interview a recent immigrant in the United States. Immigrants in the United States are facing a number of problems though out their immigration processes. The name of my subject is Ahmad Kahn, a former Indian national and a Muslim by religion. Khan is a newly married IT professional working in India. He has applied for the United States Immigration a few years ago and finally awarded the U.S. immigration. He is tall, dark and a broad man with a stubby beard. Considering the subject's appearance and body language it appears to me that the person is highly qualified and intelligent. I was right about my opinion in the first glace on the subject about his educational background, which was verified by one of the questions, where he indicated that he is a Master of Computer Science and planning for a Phd, program in Artificial Intelligence. However, there are a number of the problem he has identified in his interview that portrays the strict and prejudiced immigrations procedure of the United States.

Coming to America

Khan identified a number of issues thorough his experiences in American Immigration Laws. At first, he started off with his appearance. Bearing a beard on his face and swarthy complexion caused a lot of trouble to him. According to he was considered suspicious by the immigration authorities. Secondly, he is a Muslim, which increases the suspicion of him being a terrorist. He indicated that the catastrophic event of 9/11 has raised a number of issues especially for Muslims and Islam. Muslims are considered as terrorist and Islam is considered as a fundamentalist, and extremist religion which encourages terrorism. He said, there are black sheeps in every society; community or religion. This stereotype analysis is not justified in idealizing a person on the basis of his religious believes. America is considered a country of freedom, where there is a freedom of expression, speech and performance of religious rituals, so why these concepts are nowhere to been seen in American immigration proceedings (Borjas, 1999).

Then he identified the issue with his name, Khan. He identified he was not the only case with such a problem, immigration authorities suspect every person with this name; whether he is a toddler or an elderly. National Security is one of the main concerns of the United States which has narrowed the immigration laws and policies. Another factor, which was highlighted, in the interview was that, his parents were Indian nationals, but he was raised in Pakistan with his maternal relatives. The immigration authorities investigate not only his and his parent's national orientation but even of his grandparents, which causes years of delay in immigration procedures.

Americanization

Khan identified in his interview that though facing a number of problems in the immigration processes he has achieved the legal status of an immigrant. He was learned all that is needed to survive in the American society; however, there are various issues that he has to ...
