Movie Review: The Color Purple

As the social worker, what symptoms do you note in this family?

In the perspective of a social worker, the most obvious and dominant symptoms of the family are sexism and racism (Siskel, Gene, 1985). These two problems were dominant in America, during the early and mid of the 21st century.

What are some strengths for this family?

Despite the gloom that casts over the family, there is still a ray of light. Celie is though abused in the worst possible manner a human can be, but she still possessed respect for her husband. Her husband, eventually had the conscience to identify his horrible acts which he did, and sought redemption for his acts. An emotion which was clearly visible in the end of the movie. Other members of the family that included Celie, her sister Nettie and her children were devotedly fond of each other. The separation that came in between them only further strengthened the bonds of love between them (Matthews, Jack 1986). Separation is what also brought Celie's husband towards repentance and redemption for his actions, a move which was unusual in the society dominated with racism and sexism.

Discuss role of boundaries, family roles, rules, and interactional pattern in this family?

The family had no defined roles or boundaries. The husband is the most dominant figure in the family, and all issues are carried out as per his rules. Interaction is rare, and takes place only on the express permission and pleasure of the husband. However, members apart from the family that were closer to the husband had the freedom to reform the situation.
