Part One

MS-DOS stands for Disk Operating System. Operating system is a program that coordinates the actions of the computer, under its management by the implementation of programs. MS-DOS - the operating system, which is located on disk. The developer of the MS-DOS is a corporation Microsoft (Foley, 1990, pp.155-165). Three main functions of the operating system:

Exchange of data between the computer and various peripheral devices (terminals, printers, floppy disks, hard disks, etc.). Such communication is called "input / output data."

Provision of organizing and storing files.

Downloading programs to memory and to ensure their implementation.

Operating system MS-DOS brilliantly copes with its responsibilities. In practice, one of the major advantages of using MS-DOS is the simplicity of her understanding, despite the functional complexity.

MS-DOS FILES

The MS-DOS starts when computer starts. The computer checks the memory and searches the CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and COMMAND.COM on the system disk.

The CONFIG.SYS file is a text file that contains special commands. These commands configure the PC's hardware components so that MS-DOS and applications can use. At the beginning of MS-DOS, it executes the commands in the file CONFIG.SYS. The CONFIG.SYS file is usually found in the root directory of the unit C (Ali, 2006, pp.96-105).

The AUTOEXEC.BAT file is always executed to initialize or reset the system. The orders are usually updated frequently contains the date and time, finding ways files, configuration prompt, keyboard type, etc. It must always be in the directory root.

The COMMAND.COM program processes a series of commands and DOS internal programs. It is part of DOS is an operating system, a set of programs that allow us to manipulate information in records, so we can work with ease, comfort and speed with these, to others, DOS coordinates the operation of the microprocessor so that all work well within our computer (Johnson, 1989, pp.11-29).

Throughout the long Microsoft has been improving the DOS, since its first version the 1981. The versions that may exist, serve to correct errors identified in the previous version or to improve certain parts of the program , if the variation is in the first figure, means that major change, resulting, for example, the benefits of new microprocessors , in large part to be able exploit their advantages.

Boot DOS

Generally, the DOS is installed on computers. The main function of the DOS, as discussed above, is to manage the information that goes in comes out and saved on your computer. Boot DOS is simple: you must operate your computer by pressing the corresponding switch, the only care that there is no diskette in the drive, if any, you have to remove it quickly (Myers, 1995, pp.64-103).

After a few seconds, after checking that the system is correct ( memory , peripherals ) prompt appears you will see how the MS-DOS, usually represented by C: \>, it also called "prompt", presented together with the blinking cursor , indicating that the system is ready to receive ...
