Introduction

Music is recognized as a manifestation that intrinsically represents a person's frame of mind. Music, in essence, is a window through which we can sneak a look into an individual's unconscious or subconscious. For instance, it is found that people use music as an emblem to commune their values, beliefs, attitudes and judgments (North and Hargreaves, 1999). At the collectivist level, music has served as a prominent tool in facilitating the interaction or exchange of ideas that are afar words. Moreover, it has promoted the development and sustainability of individual and cultural identities. Listening to music not only gives us a sense of contentment but also constitutes as one of the soothing exercise in times of stress and pressure.

Discussion

Music has played an increasingly significant role in my life. It not only aids in overwhelming the negative feelings of frustration, anxiety, and sadness but is also effective in coincidence with other involvements in promoting relaxation or when an individual is aroused with positive feelings of love and happiness (Francis, 2008). Furthermore, music is closely linked to an individual's personality. The sort of music a person is attuned to listening depicts the personality and disposition of that person. Also, the preference for the music a person listens to changes with the passage of time as the personality of an individual evolves.

For instance, during my childhood I grew up listening to nursery rhymes and poems because they gave me a sense of happiness at that time. According to Sandra Trehub, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto, the school-aged children are in sync to the songs and chants, such as 'eenie-meenie-miney-mo', that share common characteristics across various cultures, including repetition, musical patterns, rhyme and alliteration.
