Mystery in Alaska: Why Have All The Sea Lions Gone?

Introduction

Alaska is the State bordered with the Pacific Ocean on the South; its coastal seas are the Bering Sea, Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea. It also has north coasts attached to the Arctic Ocean. This provides an ideal the habitant for the sea lions. The sea lines at this coastal region are also known as Steller sea lions or the northern sea lions. These sea lions were named as Steller's sea lions after the George Wilhelm Steller who discovered this species in 1741. This has now become one of the threatened species and especially in sea lions. Steller's north pacific sea lions species is in real danger for the last few years. The number of decline in this species is more than usual and it needs for the prevention. For their prevention and safety it is required to conduct a proper research to find the reason this significant decline in number of their species.

Thesis Statement

The sudden and significant decline in sea lions in Alaska attracted the researchers to concern for this species.

Discussion

One of the recent researches conducted by Frank J. Dinan, Thomas R. Stabler and Renee A. Larson for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Canisius College, New York. In this Study they analyzed the reasons for the mysterical disappearance of Sea Lions from the Alaska. This proved by various evidences and researches that there is special need for focus on the safety of this species. The Steller's sea lions are now become one the species which need to be provided safety and various measures are required to be taken at the government and community level. It is the most important aspect that there is need to concentrate on the reason for their decline and the problem should be resolved by resolving those reasons for their decline. In this research detailed evidences and experiments are provided to prove their basis of research.

Background This research provides the background study of the previous studies conducted on this issue. It was first recorded by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center that the Sea Lions are disappearing from the Alaskan Waters. This is very alarming situation because the reduction in this species is around 85-90% in the region of Prince William Sound trough Aleutian Island. The report from the National Geographic reveals that the decline in this Species is particularly marked from 1980s and 1990,s even the scientists are trying to protect them, the reason behind this sudden decline is still not clear (www.nationalgeographic.com).

Problem of the Case and Scientific hypothesis The problem is with the dangerous decline in this species, some of the reasons for this decline is provided by Pilcher and Calkins, the problem is that most of the pups don't survive and died before their age of sexual maturity. This is usually because of their vulnerability to the climatic changes. There some other problems as well, these pups re ...
