Introduction

The novel the 'Namesake' by Jhumpa Lahir and the play 'Death of Salesmen' has some commonalities as well as differences. In the stories, critical analysis the father and son's relationship has been epitomized using two different scenarios. Willy Loman, father in the play Death of Salesmen have been portrayed really suborned and lack the parenting skills to prove himself as a good father for his wife and sons. Throughout the play this character shows many characteristics that are uncommon that in the end are contributed in suicidal death for his sons.

While in the Novel 'The Namesake', the main theme throughout the writing shows how individual fights for his or her journey towards self discovery. The name suggested by the father was not liked by the sons initiated the relationship difference and the whole play revolve around the struggles of immigrant and Gogol's reluctance of accepting his name.

Summary of the Namesake

The story of namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri's is a story of a son's journey towards his self discovery. The story revolve around the Gogol considered the Second immigrant living in America. His parents came to America soon after their wedding and from then their struggle being the immigrant's start. The main issue rose when their son Gogol was born and the tradition of naming the new born by the family elder was not fulfilled. Ashoke, the father names his son which was reluctant by the son until Gogol discovers his own identity and significance of his name (Lahiri, 2012).

Thesis Statement

The Novel 'Namesake' elucidates the cultural differences of America and India, and how these cultural clash between the Indian parent and America born son raise. The whole story revolves around the continuous struggle for the integration of cultural difference and values.

Topic Sentence: The novel Namesake is based on a Bengali family who experience the complexities and conflicts of living abroad. Every country has its own culture, way of living, different cultural and traditional norms and society structure. People living in other country come across many difficulties settling in a completely different atmosphere. This happens with a lot of people living in countries other than their parent.

After the birth of their son Gogol in America they decided to move back to their country with the new born baby, the hospital psolicies came in their way. In the United States, parents are supposed to name their child right after their birth in order to maintain the record and fulfill the legality. Both Ashima and Ashoke tried many alternatives to contact their family elders to suggest the name for their new born baby, but nothing came fruitful. In the end, they were left with no option but to name their child on their own. This was the root cause of building all the other issues that lowered Gogol self esteem and confidence (Lahiri's and Mifflin, p.1).
