Introduction

The network administration and system administration are terms often taken synonymously of each other; however, there are many differences in both the terminologies. The term Network Administration refers to someone who looks after the software and hardware of computers in any organization. This includes the monitoring, maintaining, deploying and configuration of the network equipment.

Whereas, someone who is involving in the maintenance and operation of the computer network is call as the System Administration. These are the individuals who are working as a member of the Information Technology, Electronic Engineering or Communication Department. Their job role involves the operation and maintenance of the server of any organization; it also includes maintaining and protecting data on servers.

A person who is responsible for the maintenance of computer network that comprises of computer hardware and software is call as Network Administration, which usually includes configuring, deploying, monitoring and maintaining active network equipment (Richard, 1981).

The role of the network administration varies from company to company. It customarily includes responsibilities such as routing table configuration, assignment of routing protocols, network address assignment and configuration of authorization and authentication-directory services. It also includes the maintaining network facilities to individual machines, such as settings of printers and personal computers as well as drivers. The maintenance of network servers such as VPN gateways, file servers, intrusion detection systems also includes in the responsibilities of network administration.

System administration

A person who is engage to operate and maintain a computer network and/or system is declare to be a “System administrator” working in the system administration of any organization. System administration is all about the Communication or Electronic Engineering department or being the member of an information technology (IT) department (Chrintina, 2011).
