Introduction

This is the story of a man, Colin Beavan, who sailed his family on the adventure of his life without leaving home. The challenge: to continue for one year in modern life through Manhattan without leaving any environmental impact. The book or the method of No Impact Man is based on nine steps: live without generating trash, so it does not go for emissions of carbon, and organic local food, austerity, energy conservation, etc. and how to compensate the damage. The whole book is evocative and sometimes humorous style, starting with the titles of each chapter. One of the elections was precisely even reducing travel by public transport, which in the U.S., where families do not live exactly in the same neighborhood, causing emotional instability, by reducing encounters (Beavan, 2009). Until then, this reporter for more than forty years working in Business Week was addicted to the brand rags, but still managed to go to the office every day 'fresh as a rose.

Beavan's Experiment and Personal Life

The big difference is that Colin Beavan said lives in the heart of Manhattan, on the 9th floor of a building. And who says reducing carbon emissions says no elevator, air conditioner, refrigerator, motor transport - among others - and when you're a young father, the adventure quickly turns to the puzzle. His first challenge: to convince his wife, somewhat addicted to shopping, to play the game. The experience lasts one year, the countdown is engaged (Beavan, 2009). Thus, the experience of No Impact Man starts not to conform to not emit carbon, but because Beavan "was determined not to produce any type of environmental impact and create a positive impact," so also proposed offset the negative impact being involved in projects such as planting trees, donating money to NGOs in environmental activism, etc.

Limiting Travel

Like Beavan's experience, limiting travelling is one of the ongoing issues with my family. It is an increasing trend that people live all over the place which is another sign of a modern culture. People no longer live near your family. But it does cause problems with some of the family; there are three of us who will not travel for every birthday or holiday and all for the same reason; it is not environmentally sound (Rogers, Kostigen, 2007). But this does raise concerns within the family that we value the environment more than we value them. Not fair but there it is. Therefore limiting travel will possibly make the family meet each other less frequently as they live separately.
