The era of managed care, the treatment of psychiatric patients has seen significant changes. The psychiatric emergencies has seen trends such as managed care, changes in health care delivery system, and decreasing access to mental health services. The criteria for hospitalization have become more unlikely due to stricter defined parameters for admission of patients, where only those with seriously complex and major psychiatric disorders who have suicidal or homicidal tendencies are to be admitted.

The emergency department is often the first reporting point in getting access to the health care system. This is involves those individuals who have no or just rudimentary knowledge of medical practices, people with no access or who are just not willing to go to mental help centre. This cause's heavy dependency on emergency department by patients seeking shot consultations. As a result places great pressure on emergency departments. Although most of the emergency departments are well equipped with mental health professionals who can diagnose and provide appropriate referral, there are certain facilities which due to lack of professionally trained staff in the field misdiagnose and make inappropriate referrals.

Psychiatric emergency refers to sever disturbance of mood thought or behavior that needs sever attention. The psychiatric mental health service is an important hub providing mental health delivery service. In their study (Yves Chaput1*, Michel Paradis2, Lucie Beaulieu3 and Édith Labonté4) aim to examine of what exactly constitutes to be a psychiatric emergency. It was discovered that core behavioral disturbances as well as diagnoses were important factors in pertinence and urgency.

Types of Patients

Patients who suffer from alcohol or drug related abuses often require medical as well as psychosocial interventions. These are the clients who may enter the emergency service in messy and shabby state staggering to a normally dressed individual who is seeking help as he is deprived of his intake of drugs and is now having withdrawal symptoms. The patients may have used drugs and alcohol to solve existing mental and emotional problems, which present further complication of the situation.
