Introduction

The main focus of the health care settings and practices that are adopted by the health care providers is towards the quality of care and safety that can be provided to their patients. According to the American Academy of nursing magnet hospital research, a continuous emphasis has been drawn on the practice environments since the last couple of decades, which has evolved the overall functioning of delivering care and has given rise to the realization of professional practice models, and considering the replacement of more conventional practice models of nursing. In fact, “professional models of care” are considered as forces of magnetism within the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program (American Nurses Credentialing Center, 2008). This paper will mainly be focusing on Magnet Designation and its effects on bringing in change within an institution.

Magnet Designation

The term “Magnet” was coined by the American Academy of Nursing, in the beginning of 1980s, in order to elaborate such hospitals that can attract more nurses and retain them for a longer period of time. A research by Sandra and Victoria on 'Transformation of a Nursing Culture through Actualization of a Nursing Professional Practice Model', in which 163 hospitals were taken under consideration for conducting initial study and from studies; it was revealed that among them 41 hospitals were having the identical qualities that have a greater ability to magnetize and retain nurses, also they have more capacity to retain nurses at the time of a nursing shortage, and it is because of the fact that they provide better quality to the nurses in terms of work environment (Sandra &Victoria, 2010).

The same features that are able to differentiate such organizations as compare to others are considered as the “14 Forces of Magnetism”. The 14 forces have been structured in 5 different model components, which are Structural Empowerment, New Knowledge, Transformational Leadership, Exemplary professional Practice and Empirical results.

The nature and competencies needed in order to attain the Magnet Designation involves senior nurse executives to be acquainted fairly with the figures and facts related to the business along with the myths, nuances and the culture that makes it possible to bring a change or either stops it from occurring.
