Nursing Care Skills

Introduction

In order to produce positive health related outcomes it is imperative that nurses should perform all their part and tasks with great care and competent way. This paper talks about different nursing care skills and how nurses can perform various tasks of care with competency and skills.

Nursing Care for Patients with Immobility

Patients with immobility cannot perform various day to day tasks. Nurse helps patients in conducting these tasks. To perform these tasks for the patients nurse should possess competencies and skills. For patient with immobility a nurse should perform following tasks for the patients.

Waking up the patients

Waking up the patient early in the morning is the first task that a nurse is supposed to do. Ann through a research survey explored different consideration that a nurse should keep in mind and describes that a nurse should wake up the patient early in the morning as it is beneficial for the health of the patient. Ann also describes that it is imperative for nurse to note number of hours from which patient is sleeping because every individual should complete enough sleep for the well being of the health. It is also important for the patient to observe influence or impact of any medicine on patient's sleep (Ann 2004, 13).

Gaining consent

After waking up the patient, the nurse should ask the patient how does he or she feels, did he or she complete the sleep completely. After this initial conversation, the nurse should gain consent from patient regarding the usage of washroom.

Moving patient up in bed

A nurse should set the bed to a height which would correspond to the middle of the distance between nurse's hips and knees. Legs hold a stable position, the leading foot in the direction of motion. Nurse should bend hips and knees and keep back as possible and exactly right. Nurse should put the shoulder, located closer to the patient, from the position back to the patient's chest and under the armpit, and the patient at this time puts its hands on the backs of staff. Nurse should put hand on the bed behind the patient to maintain his body, elbow bent and ready to take the weight during lifting.

Then give the command to lift. Straighten your leg at the back, elbow and hand, which helps the patient to get up.

Applying a Hoist Correctly To Move Patient to Commode

Lois in his research suggests the correct way to use hoist. According to Lois, while applying a hoist in a correct way a nurse should take care of following things (Lois 2005, 33):

First of all a nurse should collect all the equipments and tools that she need in moving the patient. She should place all the needed tools such as sling, hoist or lift near the bed of the patient.

The nurse should elevate the bed of the patient till the height of her waist.

Nurse should guide the patient about how to roll on his side.

After that a nurse should fold the slings according ...
