Introduction

Section A: Problem Description

Problem Identification

Every day, we use our hands for multiple tasks and they come in contact with everything we lay them on around us present in our environment. This makes them eligible to be carriers for all types of bacteria, illnesses and infections. This increases the risk of spreading and transferring bacteria that kills over 100,000 people annually, just because of lack of correct hygiene procedures by health care providers which may be because health care workers do not have the require knowledge of the importance of hand washing and the correct techniques to do so.

Why Hand Washing Is Important

According to a recent study, nearly 100,000 people die in hospitals on a yearly basis because nurses and doctors do not follow proper procedure for hygiene (Haas & Larson, 2008). Due to unavailability of water, they use the water in the basin that has been used repeatedly raising the risks of enabling them to become bacteria carriers.

Unwashed or unsterilized hands can actually promote the spreading of malicious bacteria that weaken the immune system of the person they have affected and leave it highly vulnerable to any disease. These diseases include illnesses that are common and not severe such as a cold to life threatening problems like pneumonia.

Objective of the Project

The diseases caused by healthcare workers not abiding to proper hygiene measures and procedures leads to common and serious diseases such as influenza, hepatitis A, pneumonia, typhoid and Streptococcus. The most effective solution to the problem of infections and diseases contracted and spread by hand is regular washing of hands.

Just rinsing with clean water and soap removes and washes away bacteria and viruses from the hands and removes chances of it transferring to other parts of the body such as eyes, nose or mouth where they may enter the body of the carrier or whomever else they have touched. Hand washing is the base for prevention against germs and diseases and it brings down the probability rate of picking up an infection or some sort of harmful bacteria.

Project Objective

In the field of healthcare and nursing, enough emphasis cannot be put on the significance of hygiene and hand washing. In a hospital and healthcare setting, hygiene eliminates and reduces the chances of bacteria and viruses spreading. This can be done so most effectively by ...
