Discussion

Concept of Overweight and Obesity

In medical history, several definitions has been developed and explained to the world depending on type of tool used to measure the disease. However, the most common tool that is normally being used by doctors of all over the world is known as “Body Mass Index” (BMI) (Oecd, 2012)

Body mass index commonly used by doctors because it considered as most authentic source of providing actual figures of the disease, the process of calculating BMI generally includes height, weight and in certain cases fat of individual patient is included. However, because of its generality the panel of famous doctors and preachers of medical science has set certain standard points like if a BMI of an individual lay's between (<18.5) is considered to be an underweight person (Haddock, et al, 2011).

According to the doctors, if individual Body mass index lies between (18.5-24.9) considered a healthy individual. If the BMI lies within (25.0-29.9) than the individual is known as overweight person, in addition to the above, if the BMI of individual is (30.0-34.9) comes in the range of Obesity class 1. An individual comes in the range of (35.0-39.9) that is falls in class of Obesity II and lastly, if an individual is considered in Class III of obesity when its BMI comes in (>40.0) (Haddock, et al, 2011).

In addition to BMI, other common measurement tools used to measure the range of Obesity are Waist circumference, and body fat. The range of both these measurements tools are described in the table (Haddock, et al, 2011).
