Introduction

A long, arduous quest for human identity is being embarked by the protagonists in Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road'. This gives an understanding towards what they are truly; they uncover the scheme of things towards which they fit exactly. They understand the meaning of life. During the novel, Speaking articulates their desire. 'IT' being human identity, this article also speaks for the search of 'IT'. This 'IT' refers to an intangible thing. 'IT' is some things, according to which, every individual has the ability to hold a different meaning. Enlightenment, happiness, self entity, Life answers, the meaning of the universe and all the other such things that are encompassed through human yearn, are represented through 'IT'.

The book is written from the perspective of Sal Paradise, Kerouac's alter ego in the book and the narrator. The actual character and inspiration for the adventures Paradise experience is the young and extremely energetic Dean Moriarty, the character where Kerouac friend and hero Neal Cassady model stood for. On the Road begins with an introduction by Dean in the artistic circles of New York where Sal at that time part. In other characters include Allen Ginsberg (Carlo Marx), Herbert Huncke (Elmer Hassel) and William S. Burroughs (Old Bull Lee) to recognize.

The trips, both with and without Dean, Sal perform several times across the United States. He does include the cities of Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New Orleans to. The last voyage described in 1950 runs from New York to Denver and then Dean through Texas to Mexico City. Sal was initially inspired by the romance of life on the road and the encounters he has with different people, but the book gets going more and more overcome by loneliness and melancholy. The friendship with Dean is put to the test by his unreliability, busy as he was with different women, children and other commitments, he agreed and not after he leaves Sal several times in the lurch.

His personal experience is being conveyed in 'On the Road' by the Jack Kerouac. This is achieved by creating characters and scenes that closely relates to the aspects of his life. This novel more reflects to his personal autobiography.

The first trip of Sal's to San Francisco has been described as the part of the topic that is the first part of the novel 'On the Road'. After a divorce, Sal was really disheartened, and Sal's life was certainly changed after she met with Dean Moriarty.
