RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The main focus of this research study is to evaluate the combination of gambling and gaming industries ethical, security and legal issues, along with their effectiveness of protecting minors due to technological advances. This study is qualitative in nature because it is focused on understanding the subjective meanings that people attach to their experiences. Patton (2002) described qualitative inquiry as being “fundamentally people-oriented” (Patton 2002 p. 28). Creswell (1998) also defined qualitative research to be cantered on people. He stated, “Qualitative research is an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problem” (Patton 2002 p. 15).

Strauss and Corbin (1998) similarly described qualitative research as any research that generates results or findings not produced from some quantification. They explained, “It can refer to research about persons' lives, lived experiences, behaviours, emotions, and feelings (Strauss and Corbin 1998 p. 11). Patton (2002) suggested, “It is common that quantitative methods and qualitative methods are used in a complementary fashion to answer different questions that do not easily come together to provide a single, well-integrated picture of the situation” (Patton 2002 pp. 556-557). Patton further explained that “qualitative methods facilitate study of issues in depth and detail (Patton 2002 p. 14). This idea supports Creswell's (1998) claim that one reason to use qualitative research is “because of the need to present a detailed view of the topic (Creswell's 1998 p. 17). Qualitative research is not only used to examine the specific details of a phenomenon.

Creswell (1998) referred to how qualitative researchers attempt to gain both a detailed and a holistic understanding of a research topic. He stated, “The researcher builds a complex, holistic picture, analyzes words, reports detailed views of informants, and conducts the study in a natural setting” (Creswell 1998 p. 15). The data collected in qualitative studies are commonly represented as stories in research reports.

Research methods

It is vital to when doing research and experiments to use relevant and meaningful approaches to the research. Accurate results will help in completing the aims and objectives.

All research approaches, philosophy, strategies, horizons and methods revolve around the research onion as shown above.

Research Philosophy

The research will take a phenomenological approach due to it being more social experience based. This method is suitable due to it basing research on life experience. It produces qualitative data and is action research based which suits the investigations on online gambling.

Data Collection

Data will be gathered by interviews in which will consist on asking about life experience with gambling websites and if they are seen as ethical. Experiments conducted to see if unethical advertisement of websites generally attracts more people then websites with gambling awareness warnings. More data will be accessed through questionnaires given out to the public. It is considered to keep questionnaires effective but at the same time good natured so they do not pose any unethical ...
