Introduction

Operational management is all activities related to the deliberate transformation of materials, information or customers. Operating function includes activities that result in manufactured goods and services supplied by the organization to the external environment. Organization may vary greatly in nature operating functions. For example, in industrial raw materials are processed, and the first from the raw produce individual parts and components, then assemble them into finished products (Sainsbury et al., 2000). This paper aims to discuss the design of products and services as one the issues in operational management. Moreover, the example and case of Wal-Mart is also discussed in this paper for the better understanding of the functions of operational management.

Discussion

The Operations Management is responsible for the management of processes (activities) that produce the products or services that a company offers to the market. Without any doubt, it is one of the core functions any company, regardless of your industry. Not all companies have a department called operations, but all operations will / activities / processes, where decisions to be taken are similar and relate to the way they produce goods or services, in particular in respect to the planning of activities, effective use of resources and the selection of indicators to be used in monitoring of organizational performance.

The operations manager is an important element in any management of any company. To his team fit the ultimate responsibility for value creation i.e. the production of products or services. Field actuation of an operations manager involves planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring and control, assuming a fundamental preponderance in lasting business success. However, the main focus of this paper is a design of products and service as part of operational management activities (Birdi et al., 2008).

The key factor in producing and planning a products or services is a design of products or services. Most people believe that the product or service design is not related to the function of operational management. However, in reality, product or service design is included in the operational management issue, as it is a part of operational management. It is important for the operational managers to understand about the design of product or service, and its impact on the production ability of the product or service on daily basis. It is not necessary that all the design concepts get successful in the market, no matter how original and creative the design is.

All operational activities involved in the process production of a company. In this context includes the activities of product design, research and development, marketing, distribution, sales, finance and accounting (Sinha et al., 1995). Consequently, the manufacturing management can be defined as the task of planning overall production within companies that seek to transform their processes in drivers of competitive advantage in acquiring and maintaining skills in performing certain activities better than your competitors
