A key management skill is organizational power and influence. This skill is a "must do" if a manager is to leverage her/his own talents and to leverage the skills and talents of her/his employees (Burk, 2003).

Operating principle: For every good relationship, alliance or partnership that a manager develops outside her/his business unit, s/he increases her/his power and influence quotient by a factor of 1.5 (Hunt, 2010).

It's the, "not what you know but who knows and values you that counts" principle.
