Organizational Leadership: Personal Philosophy

Introduction

Leadership from the perspective of an organization is the factor which can make an organization successful or unsuccessful. An organization to become successful and remain that way shall need to have effective and dynamic leadership. From a broader perspective, leadership can be defined as the method for influencing others in a certain manner so that they willingly wanted to achieve particular objective. Leadership certainly is reliant on individual traits and a set of behaviors which differentiate a common person from a leader. Leaders in an organization are the fundamental and limited resource of any organization in accordance with the viewpoint of Peter F. Drucker. Thus, it shall come to as no surprise for an organization to seek leadership qualities among candidates during the process of recruitment (Drucker, 1954).

There are number of tools have been developed in the past for assessing the leadership qualities and capabilities in individuals. The development of tools was done in response of how to assess the leadership qualities among individuals. This paper in relation to the organizational leadership will try to assess the “Leadership Personality” by presenting a complete summary and inside and outside methods of assessment for leadership personality among individuals for determining a person as a leader. Moreover, the paper will present the personal philosophy of author regarding organizational leadership.

Leadership at Organizational Level

From the perspective of organizations, leadership assessment must be extended from its limited horizon of evaluating personnel at individual level to considering the effectiveness of a leader for the organization as a whole (Bennis & Nanus, 1985; Burns, 1978). This paper as highlighted above intended to review the notion of leaderships and will present the expectation of the followers from a leader or supervisor. The things which set two similar terms apart i.e. leadership and management are followers, and thus having a following in an organization will be easier for organizational leader to generate consensus for the achievement of certain organizational objectives. Total quality management has also been referred as one of the most effective tool for assessing the leadership among employees at organizational level, which will be briefly reviewed in the following discussion.

Application of fundamental leadership qualities on organization as a whole is important, which will help in assessing the organizational leadership in detail from the viewpoint of total quality management (Bradford & Cohen, 1984). However, some other tools will also be considered and discussed as assessment tools for organizational leadership, commonly used at present (Fleishman and Hunt, 1973). The attempt of individuals in an organizational setting to influence and affect the behavior of the people without exercising authoritative power is described as leadership. In simplest, the term organizational leadership in accordance with the author can be defined as the process of influencing and persuading employees to willingly participate in the process of achieving organizational objective or objectives.
