American Tribe - Cherokees

The word Cherokee is derived from the Choctaw language used in training. The basic meaning of this word is meant those people who lived in the mountains or caved. Earlier, these people dwelled in mostly caves and holes made into hills, where they kept them safe from any animal or mortal threat. These brown skinned people migrated from one place to the other and were basically as nomads who dragged their live stocks along with their canopies and families. The appreciated the vast lands where they started to live and eventually tribes on tribes were formed (Kim, & Min, 2010).

Geography and Expansion

The Cherokee nation grew as they conquered other tribes in the area because of high growth in the village population. They covered eight states covering all the parts of present day Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia and West Virginia. In 1600's, they found white men favorable to trade with the Cherokee. The Cherokees were helpful and peaceful as long as they were not being harmed by the white men; they traded deerskin for cloth, hammers, guns, and other tools (Dragger 2011, pp. 1780-1880). The intervening years were crammed with many problems and wars but in 1830, they were again forcibly kicked out from their land by the United States government.

Trial of Tears

They were sent to a new place to reside in the southwest, in the same area that they had left about 4000 years later. The move is called as the trail of tears mainly because US forced them to walk till Oklahoma and many people died while giving up the walk (Smith 2011, pp. 10-15).

Language and Customs

They spoke a language known as Iroquoian which was an invented by Sequoyah which happened to the ancient people of the Cherokee people and were highly revered (Kim, & Min, 2010).Cherokees developed their own language at about 200 years ago and wrote everything down, their customs, legends and stories so that they can teach the same to their children and their morals, values, and culture remains alive. (Dragger 2011, pp. 1780-1880). They follow identical customs and traditions that they laid down in their literature. However, it is still difficult to determine how the language of these tribal Cherokees would be interpreted as they used various symbols to represent their languages. They believed in pictorial writings which allowed them to express a lot of what they felt.

Food & Clothing

They were essentially farmers, hunters and gathers and crops including corn, squash and beans, pumpkin, melons, sunflowers, and tobacco.
