Outline of paper on ethics concerning nursing of suicidal patients in psychiatric wards

Introduction

This paper will focus on the autonomy of those patients who are compromised as to their competency and might also include those incompetent patients who may exhibit suicidal tendencies. Such incompetent persons with suicidal tendencies must be available only in psychiatric wards of hospitals.

Proposed scope of the ethics paper

The scope of this paper is to analyze the ethical implications for nurses when dealing with people with compromised competency. These ethical considerations might also somehow change for patients who are admitted in psyche wards of hospitals and exhibit suicidal tendencies in addition to their known incompetence. However, the ethical implications for the latter need to be inferred from the general ethical and regulatory guidelines available for nurses regarding the autonomy of the incompetent persons.

First, the writer will attempt to look at the philosophical and ethical perspectives on autonomy (Schermer, 2002). Next, the researcher will look at the ways to promote patients' autonomy and will also explore the problem for incompetent persons (Kverjik and Brous, 2010). Then the researcher will explore the perspective of the nurses' legal handbook concerning the topic of autonomy of patients with compromised competency (Follin, 2004). This will follow determining the nursing theory and practice regarding autonomy. The case of euthanasia presents unique problems of determining the autonomy and the autonomy related decisions of such patients become very critical. Therefore, the euthanasia for incompetent persons will be explored (Keown, 1995). Then, the researcher will also look at the connection of the patient's autonomy and privacy. Finally, prior nursing cases related to the topic will be gleaned (Yeo, Moorhouse, Khan, Rodney, 2010).
