Abstract

The paper explores and examines the best strategies and practices for parental involvement, and review the framework of Epstein which is based on six types of parental involvement. In addition, these best strategies and practices of parental involvement are assessed on the parental framework provided by Epstein.

Introduction

Caregivers and parents notably impact learning of students (the word “parent” in this Advisory refers to any primary caregiver), apart from education level of parents, racial or ethnic background, socioeconomic status. One of the most precise student achievement predictor is the extent to which parents promote learning; become involved in their education of children, achievable expectations to children and communicate high. Involvement of parent also plays a vital role in improving school attendance, higher rates of enrollment in higher education, higher rates of graduation, fewer placements in special education, lower rates of student substance abuse and violence, and higher rates of homework completion. In addition, for school, higher teacher morale is correlated to the high levels of parent involvement, higher ratings of parents, better reputations of academic and higher achievement of student.

On the other hand, there are a number of significant obstacles exist that are engage in understanding meaningful involvement of parents in schools. For instance, one study establish that more than 80 percent of parents are not willing to get involve in their child's school as they do not have time. One-third of parents reported that they are not aware about how to get involve, while one-third felt that they are nonentity to add in education of their child. Approximately, one-fourth of caregivers believed intimidate in relation to become involved in the school of child. Parents of color and low income parents are some of the least possible parents to get engaged in the education of their child and a number of the most probable parents to account obstacles to participation. In addition, involvement of parent abruptly turned down subsequent to early elementary school, leaving several high and middle schools bereft of parental involvement (Nesin & Brazee, 2005).

Discussion

One of the key socialization sources is parents, which influence on several factors of behavior, social functioning and adolescent psychological. Even though, several other aspects related with risk behaviors of adolescents have been recognized, there is promising and rising interest in gaining understanding the influence of family and parents on adoption of adolescents, protective behaviors and health-compromising maintenance. Many empirical theory and research have revealed that the extent and nature of involvement of parents in their lives of children are strongly correlated to risk conducts of adolescent.
