Introduction

Health care is referred to a combination of systematic processes that involve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various illnesses and disease that are experienced by individuals in the society. It is the responsibility of the health practitioners to provide appropriate care to patients and other individuals to help them maintain good health and live a healthy life. An important component of the health care is the provision of safety during the health care procedures that are used by health practitioners (Audit Commission, 2012, pp .18). Patient safety is now being promoted to a great extent to prevent any sort of difficulties in providing health care to patients. Patient safety is basically defined as a discipline of health care that emphasizes the analysis, reporting and prevention of medical errors that could lead to adverse conditions regarding the patient's health. It is also very important to understand that patient safety is adopted and implemented in all areas of practice relating to the medical and health care field. The area of practice in which I am working is the operation theatre. There has been a vast development in this area of practice regarding patient safety (Sanchez, 2012, pp. 80). A brief discussion on the patient safety initiative development and the improvement of safety quality in the practice area of operation theatre is presented in this paper.

Discussion

An operation theatre is basically a room within a hospital that consists of modern facilities with the help of which surgical operations could be carried out by surgeons in a safe and sterile environment. Operation theatre is an operating room in which there is no room for any mistakes for the surgeon and health practitioners because the patient is in a situation where the continuation of his life depends upon the skills of the surgeon. The skills and expertise of the surgeon are not enough for the success of a surgery, but the safety measures adopted and implemented within the operation theatre also play a vital role in making a surgery successful (Flin, 2009, pp. 338). Patient safety has been greatly emphasized in the operation theatre to maintain the quality of health care provided to patients. Various initiatives for the development of patient safety have been adopted in the practice area of operation theatre for improving the quality of health care and safety provided to patients. Safety has always been a subject of importance within the health care sector and a great emphasis is laid on maintaining patient safety within the operation theatre as well.

It has been observed that various developments for the safety of patients have been made in the area of operation theatre and the improvement of quality of patient safety is the core element within the health care sector on which great emphasis is laid upon.
