Peace Journalism
Introduction
Peace journalism can be defined as a particular approach of journalism which is responsible socially for the peaceful settlements of conflict. This concept has been discussed in detail but there is a need of research on the basis of philosophy of war reporting. This study will discuss peace journalism as it draws knowledge from war reporting and its accordance to the conflict resolution which is based on assumption of casual, linear and powerful media effects. Journalism is considered as extremely independent whose function is to provide social co-orientation (McGoldrick, 2000, p. nd). Journalism is considered to play a significant role in the peaceful settlements of conflicts but possible influence is limited. The aim of research is to identify the role of peace journalism and its role in peaceful settlements of conflicts. The study will also identify important influence for future study.
Journalism is only encouraged to support the peaceful settlement of conflict if the message which is to be communicated is reliable with the imperatives and values of those who produce news. It is also important to address the power of narrative and symbolic structures as well as the professionals and political cultures on the basis of which journalist operate (Lynch, 2002, p. 30). In addition, the supporters of philosophy of peace journalism have constantly condemned the problem that war journalists often pay attention to certain disagreement when it is late to be prevented. In response to this approach, it is also referred that media as a result of limited sources cannot be present everywhere in the world and it cannot report on all the pain and sufferings around the world. These types of normative pretentions should be considered as unfair deflection of political responsibilities. This type of journalism has also raised vital disparagement because it is not based on the necessary principles of professional news reports which are based on impartiality, objectivity and neutrality. A pragmatic shift is also observed in journalism which includes from involvement to detachment from assertion to verification and from subjectivity to objectivity.
