Question 1

Histological Effects of Microdermabrasion and Clinically Observable Effects

The research performed in relation to microdermabrasion exposed a number of histological effects that can occur as a result of this process in skin. The first and the most commonly observed change that was noticed is related to the thickness of the epidermal layer. As a result of this thickening of the epidermal layer another effect that the process of microdermabrasion has produced is that the rete ridges that are that thickening part of the epidermal became flat. Another change that was noticed is that the process of melanisation decreased and the dermal thickness was also observed. The presence of collagen also began to increase as a result of the microdermabrasion. Due to this process the elastin increased and mononuclear infiltrates. Vascular dilation was also observed in the skin (Harvinder et al, 2009).

The results that are observed through the process of microdermabrasion can be regarded as consistent with the past research related to the results and effects of microdermabrasion over the period of time. The first known study in relation to the results of microdermabrasion is by Tsai et al (1995). Tsai et al performed this procedure on 41 patients. The results of the study showed positive results (Samantha, Jeong, Lee and Mark, 2011). The main results that are highlighted by Tsai et al and are also consistent with the above mentioned result is an increase in collagen, in the elastin and thickness of the dermal and epidermal layers. For instance, discussion of Spencer (2005), regarding the result of the microdermabrasion shows the same result as above (James, 2005). Tan and his colleagues performed the procedure of microdermabrasion on 2 of 10 patients. The patients on whom the process of microdermabrasion was performed showed thick epidermal, more elastin and more thickened dermal. Besides that the studies of Freedman and colleagues, Shim and colleagues and Lloyd also gave the similar results (Tang, Blankschtein and Langer, 2002).

Quantitative Measures Used In Research Assessing the Results Achieved By Microdermabrasion Procedures

The effectiveness of the microdermabrasion process has always been suspected because of its side effects. There are number of ways through which the effectiveness or the results of the process of microdermabrasion can be observed. One of the commonly used processes to measure and assess the effects of the microdermabrasion is obtaining the biopsies of the patients receiving this treatment. The biopsies of patients that are to be obtained should be of suitable size. For instance, for the proper assessment it is assumed that the biopsy of around 1 cm diameter is suitable. Another scientific method used to assess the results that the process of microdermabrasion can produce is animal testing. There have been a number of studies performed to know the effects of microdermabrasion on monkeys (Coimbra, Rohrich, Chao and Brown, 2004).
