Performance Based Budgeting in Public Sector: The Case of Gambia

CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY

This section of the paper is entitled to represent the research design adapted in this study. The core objective of this section is to enlighten the approaches through which data collection sources were selected in order to extract valid data. In addition, this section also explains the data analysis approaches that are used to present reliable results and findings that can be generalized to entire population. The steps prescribed in this chapter are in harmony with the research objectives of the study. Nonetheless, the results extracted from the data gathered through approaches prescribed in this section can be used for the economic and social welfare of Gambia.

The research design selected for this study is quantitative due to the data extracted from the sources of information which can be measured numerically. Hence, the prescribed research is adapted for analysis. This section explores the sources of data collection from which the information is extracted. In addition, this section enlightens the research model that is implemented while analyzing the data. Moreover, this section will also define the variables used in this study along with sample of the study. This section will not only prescribe the analysis model implemented while data analysis but also justifies its implication in light of authors using particular model in previous studies.

Research Objectives

The research objectives of this study are the standard on the basis of which analysis approaches are adapted. In addition, the data collected to be analyzed in this study is also in harmony with the prescribed objectives of the study (Brannen, 1992, 38-44). The objectives of this study are enlightened below.

Define performance based budgeting and its significance.

Identify the factors influencing performance based budgeting.

Analyze performance based budgeting in context of Gambia.

Present valid and generalized results that can be used to curb poverty, overspending, inflation and unemployment not only is Gambia but around the globe.

Sources of Data Collection

There are diverse data collection sources that were identified during the process of data collection. The core standard to be followed in this perspective was to gather reliable data as the validity of the extracted results is dependent upon it. There were diverse data collection sources from which validated information was extracted. Different sources were used to gather information regarding the previously conducted research studies in this context in order to formulate authentic literature review.

The literature about previously conducted studies was gathered from different libraries, peer reviewed journals, articles, databases and other sources of valid information. In addition, for accumulating the data regarding the budgeting process of Gambia different financial databases and mediums were used such as Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs' databases, The Economist, EIU Country Data and EIU Country Intelligence in order to extract data regarding the budgeting system adapted by Gambia.

Research Model

The research model is the framework that is used for analysis. In this research study, the research model developed is regression ...
