Introduction

Data privacy is an ethical principle associated with several professions, particularly in the fields of medicine, law, sales, computers, religion, journalism, etc. In ethics and law, certain types of communication between a person and a professional are known as confidential and cannot be discussed with or disclosed to third person. In this paper, we will discuss the data privacy policies in the member countries of the European Union.

Thesis Statement

European Union has incorporated numerous policies for the data privacy of its member countries so that they may get their confidential information safe and secured. This paper will study the numerous policies which have been implemented by the European Union in order to provide data privacy benefits to its member countries.

Literature Review

The privacy and personal data protection are important elements in the various forms of electronic commerce (B2B, B2C, and G2B); however, it has become more important in the B2C area (Marc, 1998). Internet has certainly facilitated communication and commerce on the international level, but the difference in the behavior of national data protection causes legal problems for companies who want to pursue their activities beyond their borders. In the European Union, it recognizes the general rule that individuals have rights to the data which concerns or belongs to them and that companies should avoid in collecting, using, sharing or selling their data without their permission. Directive of the European Union Data Protection adopted in October 1998, has laid down four basic principles.

Individuals have a right to inspect and correct information that companies or institutions hold about them.

Companies are required to request permission from their clients before storing and using the data type.
