Abstract

Personality is a trait that explains about the behavior and feelings of a person. The paper highlights about the different concepts of personality and includes few measures to assess it. Introduction

Personality is the combination of specific attitudinal, behavioral and emotional response patterns of an individual. Most of the theorists explain their different personality perceptions in their own definition which are based on theoretical prospectus. It has been observed everyday that we assess and describe the different personalities of the people in surrounding. No matter we understand it or not but this has become our daily routine to judge the behavior of people. While our casual evaluation of personality lean to concentrate more on individuals but on other hand, psychologists use different conceptions of personality that can be applied to everyone. The research on personality has led to the development of various theories that aid to explain about the personality trait development.

Foundation of personality study

The objective study of personality began with Hippocrates's Four Humors which gave the rise to four of the temperaments (Paula, 2006). Moreover, during the second century CE, the explanation given by his successor Galen further refines its conception. The theory of Four Humors held that an individual's personality was based on the bodily balance of humors; blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile (Neil, 2010). It had been observed that Choleric people were distinguished as having a surplus of yellow bile that makes them irritable. In another research, high levels of black bile highlight the trait of pessimism and melancholy. The people of Phlegmatic were supposed to have an extra of phlegm that lead to their calm temperament and sluggishness. At last, people who have high level of blood were identified to be optimistic, confident and categorized by their passionate and cheerful disposition. The term “personality” is originated from the Latin word persona that means “mask”. Notably, in the theatrical world of the ancient Latin, the word mask was not used as a devising plot to disguise the identity of a person, but was a reunion employed to symbolize that individual.

Origins of the modern individual personality

The recent or modern logic of individual's personality is an outcome of change in culture creating in the Renaissance, which is an important element in founding modernism. On the other side, the Medieval European's logic of their own personalities was associated to a system of social roles, which includes; the kinship network, the household, the league and the corporation. These were the constructing blocks of personhood that never thought about their individuality.
