Introduction

The United Arab Emirates is a federation situated southeast of the Arabian Peninsula, in the Persian Gulf also known as the Middle East. UAE comprise of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Qaywayn. It borders Oman to the Southeast and North, and Saudi Arabia to the West and South. Currently, these emirates have one of the highest human development indices in Asia. The region has remained inhabited since at least 5500 B.C. The Emirates saw the arrival of Islam in the seventh century A.D. During the sixteenth century, it fell under the influence of the European colonial powers, settling finally under the mastering of the British. After the end of the protectorate of the United Kingdom in December 1971, six Sheikhs formed the union by signing the Constitution of 1971, in which Ras al-Khaimah joined two months later (www.cia.gov).

The principal states of UAE are Abu Dhabi and Dubai the former has 38%, and the latter has 30% of the population. They are among the largest exporters of oil and have the 6th highest per capita income in the world. In 2010, the country's population was 4,975,593, but less than 20% were indigenous. Growing presence of European workers, who settled in Dubai, and many come from the Philippines and Sri Lanka. In addition, there is a huge number of people from the Palestinian Territories (as political refugees or for a fixed-term employment), Egypt, Somalia and Sudan. The majority of the population, about 88% lives in urban settlements, the rest in small villages or enjoying the oil in the desert.
