Introduction

Population is the summation of all the species living in this world which has the ability to reproduce. Today, population growth is one of the primary concerns the world is facing which is itself giving birth too many other problems such as poverty, unemployment, and environmental pollution. As of current records, the world population is 7.122 billion. One of the concerns with the world's growing population is that the population increases in geometric progression whereas the food production increases in arithmetic progression as predicted by Thomas Malthus, a British Scholar. He suggested that the world's population needs to be controlled in order to avoid starvation.

Description

The primary method to know the size of the population in a particular area is to count everyone, known as census. This is the responsibility of government. Other easiest method to estimate the population is sampling method. For example, mathematicians survey a small portion of people and then extrapolate the result to the whole city or region. This method is easier than census process, but can produce a margin of error as population cannot be even throughout the community.

One of the causes of overpopulation is the difference between death rate and birthrate. If the number of adults that die each year becomes equal to the number of children born, then the population will become stable. This is not the case as advancement in medical sciences has defeated many diseases and therefore, there is a decline in death rate particularly in 21st century. Diseases which were incurable before can now be treated very efficiently. With advancement in medical sciences, the couple, who were unable to conceive fertility can now have their own baby. Nowadays there are vaccines available to make fertility more efficient and safe and therefore, giving rise to a population.
