Practitioner Development Plan in Naturopathy Clinic

Introduction

A naturopathy physician is an individual that employs the principles of naturopathy within the confines of conventional medical practices (joomla.utsc.utoronto.ca). It is the opinion of the writer of this paper that such an individual must be an advocate of the practice and must whole heartedly believe in the principles. With that being said, the individual must also be able to amicably convince individuals of the effectiveness of the treatment methods. For that to be possible, they must masters of all forms of communication (Egener, 2008). The purpose of this paper is to assess the writers lacking in communication and devise a Personal Development Plan to better prepare the writer to overcome the inherent conflicts that will be discussed.

Discussion

The writer of this paper has often come across trouble when trying to convince patients with respect to the benefits of naturopathy as compared to other conventional and often prescribed treatment plans. The most commonly faced problem is that the writer is often unable to completely explain the comparative benefits. This most often results in the patient leaving dissatisfied with the consultation session and usually seeks out a second opinion; causing a considerable loss in business as well as causing doubt in the writer's ability to treat the patients effectively.

Part of the writer's effort to improve specific communication skills, the writer aims to improve on body language usage, improve skills in persuasive and explanatory speech as well as incorporating the involvement of previous patients who are quite happy with the quality of care provided at the facility. Patients will be allowed to access to previous patient's contact details, assuming the previous patient agrees to the plan, and allow the previous patient to share their experience with the potential client/patient. This way, if the writer, despite his gradual improvements in communication, is unable to persuade the patient, prior patients might be able to persuade the potential customer based on their positive experiences.

In order to be better able to improve communication skills, the writer has developed the following Personal Development Plan, detailing strengths, weaknesses, how the weaknesses will be resolved and what precisely my role as a naturopathy physician requires (Howells et al, 2010). The writer has come up with a SMART plan; a plan based on whether or not the goals mentioned are specific, how recognizable and measureable the results are, how attainable the specific goal's result is, how relevant the goals are to my said goal how time bound each is. The SMART Personal Development Plan is as follows.

Personal Development Plan

Step # 1: What are the requirements of my role?

To listen to the patient's ailments, complaints and suggestions

To understand the patient's complaints and prescribe the most relevant and effective form of treatment

To communicate the treatment to the patient in the most efficient manner

Step # 2: Recognition of Strengths
