Preparation of 2-Chloro-2-methylpropane

Preparation of 2-Chloro-2-methylpropane

Introduction

The convenient way of preparing tertiary haloalkanes by react a mineral acid with the tertiary alcohol. The hydrochloric acid with the reaction of 2-methyl-2-propanol gives the product as 2-chloro-2-methylpropane.

Safety audit:

Sodium bicarbonate: slightly hazardous, irritates skin and eyes.

Magnesium sulphate: hazardous in case of ingestion, slightly hazardous in case of skin and eye contact or in case of inhalation.

HCl: corrosive.

2-methyl-2-propanol: flammable, hazardous if ingested and irritates eyes.

Brine: slightly hazardous in case of skin and eye contact, ingestion or inhalation.

Method

In the method place concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid [Conc =12M, 1.5 = mol] and 2-methyl-2-propanol [0.5 = mole] in ...
