Pride & Prejudice

Introduction

"Pride and Prejudice" is a romantic novel written by the famous author Jane Austin. It was first published in 1813 in the location of the United Kingdom. With the publicity of this book, several movie adaptations were made to illustrate how the characters in the book would appear on the television screen. The movie version that is being compared to the book is the adaption directed by Joe Wright and produced in 2005. The main characters of the movie are Keira Knightley, Matthew MacFadyen, and Rosamund Pike. Throughout this essay, several themes will be compared of the book and the movie in which they are found similar (Morrison, 2005).

The story is about a young girl called Elizabeth Bennett who lives in England. She is an independent and assertive girl who dreams of what most women dream of during that time; a wealthy man and being the wife of a wealthy man. Some of the changes in the movie include minimization of the act where Elizabeth visits Rosings Park, Hunsford Parsonage, Peberley. Also the movie does not include various supporting cast including the Hurst family, Maria Lucas, the Phillips, the gardener's children, and many military officers as well as townspeople. All in all, the movie and the book share five crucial themes. The importance of environment and upbringing development of young people's character and morality is termed as a major theme.

The main theme that was not discussed in the film with respect to the novel is that the theme of wealthy arrogance was not well discussed throughout the movie (Mary, 2012).

The true love that was demonstrated by Elizabeth and Darcy showed love based on true feelings and attraction and was not related with poverty and wealth difference between Darcy and Elizabeth. This true love forced both to conceal their feelings (Thornton, 2012).

This was mainly due to the fact that during Jane Austen's time period, the feeling of love was often seen sacrificed in marriage. In the current world, most marriage is seen on lust that fades or as an economic necessity.
