The consumption of alcohol by the underage people is constant public health problem in the USA and alcohol is consumed at a large scale among the youngsters. The economists use school based approaches that are primarily aimed at prevent alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana use among the population. There are numerous strategies that try to involve the families of the affected teenagers for the prevention programs. Policy strategies are even utilized to increase the minimum legal drinking age, and, to reduce the commercial access of alcohol by the teenagers. This even creates a chance for decreasing the purchase of alcohol by the teenagers. It is quite clear that the economists must exert consistent efforts in order to help adolescents in discontinuing the consumption of alcohol. Therefore, all issues related to principal of economics will be discussed in detail.

How an economist would approach the problem of alcohol abuse

Underage drinking is a consistent public health issue in the whole USA. The usage of alcohol has even risen for children, and, its percentage has also increased at a rapid pace. Furthermore, the consumption of alcohol is high as compare to other drug substances. A strong association exists between the consumption of alcohol and youth. There are several behavioral problems that usually occur because of the drinking of alcohol. According to one study, serious behavioral problems occurred in the adolescent' life because of the high consumption of alcohol. This factor led to serious problems in the teenager's life and they were accused of committing several unethical activities. There was one more study that found people who drank a lot of alcohol at an early stage had a chance of suffering from chronic disease. Though, the chances for those people who started the consumption of alcohol after 21 and did not drink regularly developed fewer chances for suffering from chronic disease. This is the reason why the economists stated that every possible effort should be made for preventing the adolescents in drinking alcohol at an early age (Cook, 1993, 429).

Economic way of thinking in an analysis

The economists developed the fact that in order to prevent the teenagers in drinking alcohol, the cause of this activity should be identified. In this way, effective strategies can be prepared by psychologists for introducing some behavioral exercise that will help the teenagers to recover from the problem of alcohol consumption. The economists should communicate the costs that are associated with this activity and the loss the youngsters can face because of the increase in healthcare costs. When youngsters suffer from serious health problems, they need to go to the doctors for the treatment. This is one of the major concerns for the economists because it also puts the life of the youngster at threat. There are several stakeholders in the society who can contribute towards the betterment of the society (Flay, 1994, 44).
