Communication is an act intrinsic to human existence, consisting of the ability to exchange ideas, to dialogue, to talk aimed at human relationships. As Majumdar, et. al., 2004, communication can be defined simply by “shared meaning”, ie, when there is understanding of the message that is sent between the sender and receiver. Although people share the words found in the dictionary, how to use them to convey meaning is unique. Communication must be understood as a process of understanding, sharing messages sent and received, and these messages and how it gives its exchange exerts influence the behavior of people and cause changes in the environment in which communication is effect.
Professional communication in nursing is the ability of a health care provider to help people cope with their problems, they relate to the others, adjusting what can not be changed and facing blockages to self-realization. Majumdar, et. al., 2004 reports that professional communication is seen as a process through which a person consciously tries to help others increase their adaptive capacity. Professional communication allows an interaction between nurse and patient, and provides the opportunity to achieve a human relationship that achieves the goals of care. The use of communication in nursing increases acceptance and understanding of the patient regarding the procedures, reducing the need. Thus, developing communication skills is very important for health professionals, especially nurses, who must know the meaning of the messages sent by the patient and then prepare a care plan suited to meet the needs of the same. For Majumdar, et. al., 2004, adequate and effective communication is one that tries to reduce conflicts, misunderstandings to achieve defined objectives in the solution of problems encountered in situations of interaction with patients.
