Project Assignment: O'Charley

Part 1 Business section

Business Description

O' Charley's is part of the food industry and is a dining restaurant where the menu is mainstream, innovative and distinct simultaneously. It differentiates itself by serving its customers with high quality organic food at reasonable prices. The menu includes a variety of items such as different types of steaks, BBQ along with BBQ sauce, fresh seafood including salmon, sandwiches, burgers and salads with unique salad dressings. O'Charley's signature dessert is the caramel pie which is a highly recommended item.

All menu items feature a selection of side lines offered specially with the popular yeast rolls. The unique menu has always been accompanied by attentive services provided to the clients by the staff. All orders are prepared fresh giving O'Charley's a competitive advantage and differentiating it from other casual dine in restaurants. A special feature about O'Charley's restaurants is that all its restaurants are open seven days a week, offering lunch and dinner and brunch on weekends. It also offers a full time bar service for those customers who want to unwind. O'Charley's seek to create a casual atmosphere that reflects the culture of the local community (https://materials.proxyvote.com).

Operating strategy

O'Charley's three restaurants have different cultures and principles of operations that make them all successful. Operations are usually carried out in three concepts separately. Each concept has been well integrated with the home office for supportive and administrative functions. These functions include management information systems and procurement systems that can be done through home based offices. Different teams for varying concepts enable companies to operate successfully and expand its strengths by focusing on core activities. (http://www.sec.gov).

Growth Strategy

O'Charley's plan to expand its target markets in the Southeast and Midwest as well as Northeast. Its target markets include metropolitan markets and smaller market that are close to the metropolitan markets. The strategy of O'Charley's is to cluster the new restaurants in order to enhance marketing efficiencies (http://www.sec.gov). O'Charley's growth strategy should be to operate its existing restaurants profitably rather than opening new ones which could be difficult to handle and operate. This will enable it to operate a disciplined and moderate growth strategy.

The success of a well planned expansion depends on qualified personnel, proper management systems, examination and evaluation of competition present in markets, political situations and general economic situations that affect the daily workings of the restaurants. This in turn may diminish a company's growth perspectives. Growth strategies depend on the availability of new markets which could be penetrated. These markets vary in terms of demographic conditions, changing consumer preferences, income levels and spending patterns. The growth strategy is likely to strain the management and financial systems and other resources. More over a well organized and efficient information system is vital for the success of the growth strategy.
