Abstract

It's often recognized that the primary role of Nursing Management or Manager is to plan, organize, direct and control financial resources, human and material with the intent to effectively fulfill the goals of the institution. The nurse who performs the role of manager should guide their activities from the knowledge that provides administrative sciences, economics and politics. The theories and principles of these disciplines are necessary for the administrative practice of nursing care. Barcode Medication Administration plays vital role in nursing care and affects the performance of nursing staff. This project is aims to identify the variables that are leading towards improper use of Bar Coding Medication Administration (BCMA) system at a 300 bed facility hospital providing patient care in the areas of trauma, emergency, medical-surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics, cardiac, surgery, and medical & surgical intensive care.

Introduction

The management of nursing services becomes increasingly difficult under the speed of transformations, outdated technology, service delivery processes, and the institutional and managerial dimensions. Nursing management is a social process that involves the responsibility of the best use of resources to an end, i.e., manages to lead human beings to predetermined targets, with the nurses in any health facility or service responsible for the proper integration of human, material, economic and financial, and to achieve a goal of optimal care.

This thinking explains why the nurses' health services need to have current knowledge management and its goals. The reason is that, so they can more effectively fulfill their responsibilities of leaders of health care as service managers responsible. Nursing intention is to enable the responsibilities, in the management of health services, through a methodology that aims to explore experiment, seek information, communicate the results of his activity, raising and resolving problems. In this way, they can better face the challenges of daily practice.

Medication errors are the second most important frequent cause of injury amongst each sort of errors in medication (Leape, et al., 1991). Of issue to practice of nursing, errors in administration of medication are 2nd only to ordering of errors (Cullen, Bates, et al., 1995). The foreword of information technology aimed to support secure practices of medication, like the system of Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA), proposes new prospects for reducing Medication Administration Errors (MAE). Bar Code Medication Administration was designed to get better safety of patient, enhance documentation of administration of medication, reduce errors of medication, and detain the accountability data of medication. Overall the objective of this research is to assess the results of Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) on errors of medication administration: route, time, dose, medication, and wrong patient. Theory of Rogers (1995), innovational diffusion of organization, gave the framework of study.

Purpose of Project

The purpose of the project is to highlight the potential affects Bar Coding Medication Administration (BCMA) system and identification of the problems or issues faced by the nursing staff due to improper use of Bar Coding Medication Administration (BCMA) system.
