Introduction

The article that is being studied is “A qualitative study of the experiences of people who identify themselves as having adjusted positively to a visible difference” which is based over the visible differences of individuals and how they cope with this disfigurement in their daily lives.

Aims and Hypothesis

The main aim of the article was the interview of groups as well as individuals who showed positive changes. A total of 12 people were interviewed that showed a variety of changes that were visibly different. The article based over a thematic analysis divided the differences into four themes that were the essentiality of appearance, relations with others, personal growth and the factors of coping. The findings that are showed in the article provided a deep overview on the personal outlook as well as the behavior of individuals that assist to the adaptive coping and showed a potential for implications in future research as well as interventions that were focused for the individuals that showed a poor visible difference. The group and individual interviews were used for research in the field (Egan, Harcourt, Rumsey, 2011).

Rationale

It was observed that in UK at least one million people showed a visible difference. Based over recent researches, the article stated that the majority of the research that has been done over the psychosocial impacts of visible differences was mainly targeted over the experience of individuals that were having issues within the society as well as reported depression and anxiety. Furthermore, the article showed that even though the issues showed a difference that the normal, there were many people who did not report to such problems. An example was further quoted that showed that in a study of 650 individuals, 30 percent of the participants stated a level of distress. However, this was only a report of the minority of the participants. Another survey in this regard showed that 70 % of the participants observed appositive aspect of having a cleft. A case study of an individual who took burn injuries at 18 showed how visible differences provided the individual with new opportunities and outlooks (Egan, Harcourt, Rumsey, 2011).

Ethical issues were also considered in this aspect referring from an article by Eiserman that stated it would be unethical to mainly aim on pathology and not observing the positive outcomes and benefits that were being gained through visible difference (Bell, 1997). The positive functionality if studied would be able to promote well being. The article then showed why this topic was chosen as there was little research and studies that were done in this regard and less focus was given to the experience and positive outcomes that were related to the visible difference.

Definition of terms/ concepts/ variables

The article also emphasizes that the studies that were done over this aspect were more focused over ...
