Abstract

Aim

The hip fracture is a life altering injury affecting a patient's quality of life. It has a high rate of prevalence as it imposes a great burden on the society in conditions of cost and ruins psychosocial aspects of a patient. This study is designed to assess and increase awareness about the psychosocial impact on patients and their carers after surgery of fractured hip. For this purpose previous literature was reviewed to identify new themes that can assist the readers to conduct future researches. The literature of these themes supports the idea that by getting aware of the psychosocial aspects of patients and the carers after undergoing hip fracture surgery can improve the patient's quality of life drastically.

Methods

A literature search can be defined as a systematic approach to identify, retrieve, and bibliographic manage independent studies. The main purpose is to locate information on a topic to identify areas for future study and developing guidelines for clinical practice. Critical Appraisal is described as a process to examine carefully and systematically the research to evaluate its reliability, value, and relevance in a particular context (pp.294). This dissertation is based on the secondary data. The method of research is thematic analysis in which the information or data is obtained to generate themes that assist in answering the research question under study. To locate the pertinent literature the researches were conducted from MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Bio Med Central, EBSCO host, and Pub Med Central databases. Ten articles were selected for critical appraisal based on the primary data.

Results

Ten articles were selected for critical analysis to under the psychosocial aspects of patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. By the help of thematic analysis 4 themes were identified which are as follows:

Theme 1: Acute care and inpatient rehabilitation processes

Theme 2: Psychological and Social Variables

Theme 3: Disability experience

Theme 4: Improving patients quality of life

Discussion

The four themes identified in this study were interrelated with each other. These outcomes are known to be amenable to psychosocial treatments yet; there are insufficient evidences to recommend the practice changes. Additional research on interventions in this critical analysis are needed, so that a core outcome set and future evaluations including the outcomes of patients reported such as compliance, care and quality of life of a patient can be enhanced after hip fracture surgery.

Conclusion

The consideration of psychological factors usually impedes the hip fracture recovery which is significant for all the nurses and health care professionals involved in the process of rehabilitation of after hip fracture ...
