Introduction

Students in Maryland have several options for health insurance. Because of the Affordable Care Act, students can stay on their parents' health insurance until age 26 if they do not have health insurance focused on employers. By Maryland law, unmarried students can remain on their parents' plans until age 25, regardless of whether they are funded by employer insurance. Children under 19 years may be eligible for coverage under the health program for children in Maryland, and students can have access to health insurance plans sponsored by the school.

The Affordable Care Act

In September 2010, a provision of the Affordable Care Act came into force, which allows people 26 years to stay on the health insurance policy of their parents, if they are not eligible for their own health insurance offered through the employer. Marylanders can stay on their parents plan until age 25, regardless of whether they can get insurance elsewhere. After 2014, they can stay on the plan despite eligibility for other coverage. In addition, the student does not need to be full-time or unmarried under the Affordable Care Act (MCHP, 2012).

College and health insurance plans sponsored by the University are available at most schools of Maryland. Schools in partnership with major operators such as Aetna (Towson University) and United Healthcare (University of Maryland at College Park, Frostburg State University) for providing student health insurance plans. These plans offer comprehensive coverage. Policies are not renewable, and the student must reapply each school year. Health center in each school has information on the plan details and costs.
