Introduction

Home health care has become increasingly important as nurses and doctors must be available around the clock. The availability of nurses and physicians are in many cases not sufficient, for example, a nurse during call time responsible for up to 400 patients. It is believed that the reduced number of seats in inpatient care and lack of health care workers in home care means that elderly patients receive worse care and that patient safety is compromised.

In addition to this, the study presents that the home care is a health service that is provided to the patients in their home on the recommendation of the attending physician after hospitalization. Study of this workforce indicates distinct challenges as it is de-centralized, often mobile and part-time. As part of a larger project on blood exposures and sharps injuries in home health care, the study particularly focuses on the challenges of recruiting a large group of home health care nurses which helps and also describes novel cross sectional methodology of survey.

Methodology

For the data collection of the study, total of 1772, 18-page safety and health surveys were given and 1225 utilizable surveys were gathered. For the study, the recruitment was conducted with cooperation from 2 labour unions and 8 home health care agencies. A financial incentive that is about $ 25 and intensive personal contacts were employed. In the study, few groups of home health care clinicians were contacted by mail; however, others groups of home health care clinicians were contacted during the promotion that is through mini-fair at their agency (Markkanen, Chalupka, Galligan, Sama, Gore, Kim, Bello, Kriebel, and Quinn, 2008).

Results

The results of the study show that the 69 percent of overall rate of response is better as compared to that in several health surveys. Promotional events took place which reflects that survey returns were highest which is from 67% to 91%. In addition to this, the mail only strategy creates lower rates of response which is from 53% to 55%, regardless of the similar financial incentive (Markkanen, Chalupka, Galligan, Sama, Gore, Kim, Bello, Kriebel, and Quinn, 2008). Home healthcare is changing, as the study revealed that right now a renewal in home healthcare is taking place that can lead to parts of the home health care which will ultimately be driven by the municipalities. The study shows that in relation to safe and secure aspect of health ...
