Abstract

This research paper is intended to assess the role of three characters from the book “Random Family” by Adrian Nicole Leblanc. The study separately highlights the role of each character Jessica, Coco and, Cesar through coalition their characteristics with the psychological theories of Erikson and Freud.

The findings of the study indicate that the developmental stages have the lifelong impact throughout the life of the person. The three main characters of the story were also the victim of developmental and social deficiencies which ruined their entire lives.

Introduction

Background

The author of the Random Family: Love, Drugs, Trouble and Coming of Age in the Bronx, Adrian Nicole Leblanc, marvelously depicted the condition of Bronx in the story and represented the borough as predominantly moderate income to the predominantly lower income area reflecting the high poverty with the increased rates of adequate crimes and violence. The book follows the story of four teenagers and their interwoven lives with the delinquent and violent activities and efforts for survival in the poor section of the Bronx, New York City. The story has been comprehensively illustrated and attuned splendidly with the rhythms of life and emotions of the characters. The author has critically illustrated the deeply intimate portrait of the poor urban life at the borough of Bronx.

The research paper intends to highlight the lives of three teenagers from the story, Jessica, Coco and Cesar. All of the characters were intimately immersed in the wrong doings whether it is the drug abuse or the other delinquent activity such as gangs and prisons due to the poverty. This research analysis has deeply and prominently emphasized on the lives of the characters and simultaneously drawn the strands of their behavior with the psychological theories of Freud and Erickson.

Objectives of the Study

The primary objective of this research paper is to determine the roles of three characters from the book Random Family.

The other objective is to represent the links between the characters role and their lifestyle issues with the psychological theories.

This paper also intends to interpret each of the characters life in the light of Erickson theory and Freud theory of psychology.

Significance of the Study

Understanding the psychology of people in the light of theories offers the great opportunity to reap the benefits of psychological models in analyzing the mind and behavior of human beings. This research paper aims at rendering the characteristics of characteristic of the famous book Random Family and analyzes the role of three characters with the help of psychoanalysis.

The book portrays the poor living of the Bronx and hype of criminality due to the lack of quality schools and job opportunities which convinces the people to turn into the criminals while highlighting the evils of poverty (Anderson, 2005).
