Introduction

The most challenging skill area is reading for the most of students with learning disabilities. A plethora of aspects in life are affected by reading. Students with learning disabilities (LD) are frequently classified in this category due to an absence of practice with reading and less time to concentrate upon building skills (Sze, 2009). According to Chall (1983), in the first years in school, the most important activity is learning to read and it is also the foundation for further academic accomplishment when students read to learn. Literacy acquisition is regarded to be most substantial even by children starting their first year in school; they state that reading is the initial thing they want to learn (Dahlgren & Olsson, 1985). Early reading development is crucial for later academic achievement as it is a very strong predictor of later reading development (Juel, 1988; Stanovich, 1986). A wide range of reading issues is encompassed by learning disabilities in reading including dyslexia. Reading comprehension, fluency and word analysis are some of the most common reading disabilities (www.projectidealonline.org). With the majority of students with LD having reading difficulties, comprehension strategies are needed to be integrate by teachers into their instruction at all grade levels to teach students with LD explicitly how to employ the strategies for enhancing their comprehension. The aim of this paper to explore why children with learning disabilities experience difficulties in learning to read, with a focus on the elementary grades (1-4). This paper will analyze the background, the association among learning and reading disabilities, students with learning disabilities' characteristics, their struggles in reading and how should such children be served? Processing difficulties associated with a reading disability, causes of a reading disability and the diagnostic process will also be explored in this paper.

Understanding Learning Disabilities

The Specific learning disabilities are one of the major psychological disorders affecting individuals on a daily basis. When an individual fails to obtain, transmit and interpret information in an appropriate manner, he/she is said to be suffering from specific learning disability (Anon, 2012). There are multiple factors which lead to a person being affected by specific learning disabilities. Learning Disabilities are caused to a great extent by a flawed brain structure. The inconsistent brain structure proves a hurdle in the successful learning for individuals. Lack of environmental opportunity is another significant factor that contributes to increased obstacles in the successful learning. Learning Disabilities are the most dangerous and never ending form of learning disability.
