Abstract

The paper discusses four articles related to environmental conservation, forms of government and sustainable development. Discussion as per how consumers can act sensibly towards environment protection, how people's living standards can improve and which form of governance promotes people's welfare has been outlined. Steps proposed as per improvement strategies to be followed are given with the conclusion. The ultimate aim of this paper is to strive for excellence in this world, by making sure that sustainable development is being ensured at all levels.

Introduction

Humans have made a lot of progress till now. Debate exists as per whether this progress is sustainable or not. In modern times, the focus is solely on increasing production and GDP, yet the standard of living has been sacrificed greatly. Humans have a great say in the performance of eco system which is host to a number of species. In the conquest to extract more out of the system, humans have greatly deteriorated the eco system through their operations. The increasing reliance on fossil fuels, CO2 emissions, rising population, increase food demand has caused strain on the planet earth. Sense of individual responsibility needs to be inculcated to protect earth. Democracy which is based on promoting people's interest and market efficiency theory based on market autonomy has failed to deliver to expectations. Post market capitalism theory has bestowed financial market with the extreme rights to play with people's destiny.

Discussion

Green Consumption

The article in itself promotes self responsibility on the part of consumers. When issues such as environmental deterioration come on the foray, we all blame firms for their unethical behavior. Firms do play their part in environmental deterioration, yet consumers also need to act sensibly. The article discusses Ireland, where consumers have taken initiatives in protecting environment. Such measures to be adopted on a mass level need some critical thinking. There are many people who believe in this theory; however one can't ignore the complexities involved in applying this principal for every consumer, as not everyone will welcome this initiative.

In the 1960s and 1970s there emerge an increase need of environment protection in Europe, as people started realizing that they do have a part in this as they are the ones who consume these product. Today it's now been considered as a part of environmental reform. A great debate exists as per whether consumers should restrict their consumptions or should envy for organic modes of production. The concept of environmental conservatism on the part of consumers is highly in many studies. (Marketers have sought after identifying environment conscious consumers and sociologists too have been tracking family consumption pattern changes. In Ireland, Green Party have to their credit promoted green conservatism. The party's vote bank comprises of people from middle to upper class segment of Ireland.
