Introduction

Nursing happens to be a very dynamic profession. It offers many rewards and advancement in career opportunities. It remains a continuously interesting profession to those who want to engage in lifelong learning. Nurses nowadays are being expected to be more professional with a complete mastery over their subject and the acquired set of clinical skills that will allow them to provide life saving and other services at a professional level. The entry level registered nurse or RN is only the first step in starting a nursing a career. Though this step alone is enough to guarantee a job, yet this setup along with passing the NCLEX should only be the first major steps in the career of a nurse as a wide room is open for other options to be considered (Banks & Baily, 2010).

The bright side of the nursing profession is that it allows a wide range of diverse fields into which they can enter while also remaining employed. With higher education, the RNs can successfully open the way to more opportunities. The chances for nurses to engage in a very advanced professional life are very high. After RN, they can go on to complete their graduation and masters. They also have the option of taking up PhD courses. Even within graduation, there are many advanced branches of nursing and the candidates can chose the field they like for them the most. For example, they can opt for pediatrics or cardio. Those who like a very demanding and hard job may apply for flight nurse. In short, there are various academic options open for a RN which he or she needs to take full advantage of in ensuring a better future (Banks & Baily, 2010).

The current healthcare system requires nursing professionals that have been prepared at both the masters and graduate level. However, nurses need not employ the stepped approach in their academic career if they are focused on a long goal like attaining the doctorate. The prospectus of moving from baccalaureate to doctoral is very attractive as it requires less time and incurs lower educational costs. Once the choice of degree has been determined by the registered nurse, then he or she must choose the type of program that would be right for him or her. In America alone, there are more than 500 nursing schools. There is a large menu of over 2,000 graduate programs. These cater to the needs of eh registered nurses who want to increase their education and the level of their professionalism. The concept of nursing has long changed over the past century. It came out to be an open profession from being regarded as the female profession. It has advanced over the years with several different branches and departments having risen.
