Relationship between CAD/CAM and CIM

Introduction Product manufacturing or designing provides an essential function in the manufacturing and production systems. CAD and CAM help to find out the ultimate success of a merchandize or product (www.nuigalway.ie). CAD and CAM help in determining the ways of creating the production or manufacturing system. It also helps in determining the equipments that are needed to be brought, and it also helps in determining that how cheaply and easily the product can be designed or manufactured (www.nuigalway.ie).

History

The first crucial improvement is the Numerical Control (NC) in machine control which was established in 1952 at MIT. Initially hardwired systems were made for Numerical Control Systems because these systems were manufactured with discrete systems (elearning.vtu.ac.in). Later these systems were manufactured by using combined chips of the first generation. Paper tape was in early numerical control machines as an input channel. Tape reader was fitted with every numeric control machine in order to read the paper tape (elearning.vtu.ac.in). Paper tape then used to transfer the program to the machine's memory blocks wise.

A set of NC was controlled by mainframe computer till the mid of 60's (elearning.vtu.ac.in). When the tape reader was bypassed by the computer in order to convey the data of the program to the controller of the machine then this technology was known by the name of DNC i.e. direct numerical control. NC machines were controlled by the mini computers in the late 60's. Offline editing, software logic processing and control and mass program storage facility was provided to NC machines to make them soft wired (elearning.vtu.ac.in). This technology was known as CNC i.e. Computer Numerical Control. Compact CNC machines are established by the use of microprocessor since the period of 70's. DNC i.e. distributed numerical control is the additional development in this technology. In DNC, the NC machine processing used to carry out by several computers which were operating or functioning of different levels of hierarchy (elearning.vtu.ac.in). This hierarchy includes host mainframe computers and even plant computers. With the help of 64 and 32 bit microprocessors, CNC machines are being manufactured. Such systems that are based on Personal Computers are also becoming popular (elearning.vtu.ac.in). CAD/CAM and CIM in today's world and their impacts

Cad systems are such specialized systems that are based on graphics software. Hence, for these systems, knowledge and adherence to graphics programming is essential. Graphic images in these systems are based on 3D or 2D coordinate system (www.referenceforbusiness.com). A device which supports coordinate system in 2D is used to map or construct images directly on the pixels of the hardware device.

Although the devices that are under designing or that have been designed are generally based on 3D objects (www.referenceforbusiness.com). For the representation of the space where the substances reside need world coordinate system. For the representation of the stuff in the space, it is required to have a ...
