Araby

In the story, the narrator wrote about his own experiences, as he was growing from the young age to the age of puberty. He was in the age when a person normally attracts by beauty and opposite sex. As usually boys develop fantasies for the girls (Siriwong P. and Kateleau A.,2011, pp.310), similarly he had a strong crush on a girl, who lived in her neighborhood; her name is mentioned as Managan's sister throughout the story. He has created an ideal and is in love with his fantasy, not the actual girl.

Finally they had a talk, and she told him that she love to go to “Araby” - a festival bazaar in town but, she cannot go as she had to attend the retreat in her convent. The boy was so eager to do anything for her that he promised her to go to the bazaar and bring something nice for her, even though he did not even know what she likes. He asked for permission from his uncle who had to give the boy, money to go to the bazaar. Waiting to go there, he could not concentrate on anything else, and kept thinking of the romantic and spiritual bazaar and the gift which he had to buy for the girl. Unfortunately, his uncle came very late that night, due to which he reached the bazaar almost at the closing time. He could not find anything for her, but he found one girl dealing and flirting with her customers. He realized that, in reality, the bazaar is not according to his expectations. He left frustrated and sad.

Analysis

Love at the young age is nothing but an obsession. The boy was in fact, loving his created illusion or ideal, not the actual girl. As he was more concerned about her beauty, in every instance he saw the girl, “…her figure…” is “defined by the light…” This is a perfect example of how the boy preoccupied with his own idea of beauty. It was not love but the usual attraction for the opposite sex, which is usual in the teenage. By the end of the story, he realized that reality is very much different from his illusions and idealistic approach.

The relationship of the couples reveals the theme of the author that there is a great difference between the imagination and reality of the world.
