The development of the tourism industry in Nigeria
Introduction
Tourism has become the most popular recreational activity that is used for leisure as well as for business purposes. In 2011, more than 983 million International tourists were recorded with 4.6% increment in the recorded international tourists in 2010. This reflects the latest trend of the tourism in the globalized world and induces the development of the tourism in the entire world.
Background of the study
The government of Nigeria has identified the attractive future of the tourism in the emerging African market economy. The detailed analysis of the circumstances of the Nigerian economy and market reveals that the tourism has potential to catapult the traditional trend of the existing Nigerian economy (Bankole, A. S., & Babatunde, M. A., 2010, 489-496). The recent mission statement of the Nigerian government embraces the idea that supports the tourism as the primary sector of concern in the economy market of Nigeria. Another trigger that induced the tourism trend in Nigeria is the socio economic factor that is directly linked with the development of tourism in the premises of Nigeria (Honey, M., & Gilpin, R. 2009, pp 76-790.
Moreover, the tourism has become the sharpest revenue generating trigger at international level that induces the need to investigate the effectiveness of the tourism industry of Nigeria (Ayeni, D. A., & Ebohon, O. J., 2012, pp n.d). Ina addition to it, the ample pervasiveness of numerous ethnic groups makes the country a more attractive place to experience different tastes of numerous cultures. Being the most prominent part of the African economy, Nigeria is attempting to burnish its economic competencies by inducing the crunches of the tourism opportunities. Therefore, Nigerian government is embroidering its efforts in the context of tourism development (Oyeranti, O. A., & Bankole, A. S., 2010, pp n.d).
Problem statement
The emerging economy of Nigeria has some underlying hinders that distracts the pace of the tourism development in Nigeria. Although the government is supporting the maximum integration of the tourism activities in the premises of Nigeria but still there are some alternative actions that are required by the government to do in order to thoroughly implement the strategy regarding the enhancement of the economy of Nigeria through tourism development. In addition to it, the noticeable political instabilities in the Nigerian economy is considered as the biggest hurdle in the growth of the tourism industry of Nigeria (Agba, A. O., & et al, 2010, pp 355-365). These political instabilities damage the health of this sector as well as this lacking point of the Nigerian economy reduces the opportunities for Nigeria.
