Research Proposal for International Business Strategy Research

Introduction

This dissertation proposal aims to outline the proposal to conduct research in order to develop the dissertation. The topic of the research is developing international business strategy to expand the local small business internationally. There have been numerous advances in the field of strategy, business strategy, and international business strategy. In addition, the current multi-national businesses are also based on certain international business model which is guided by the international expansion business strategy. There are numerous international business strategies. Additionally, these business strategies address the way local or small business could become really international and expand into international markets. However, the specific international business strategy which has been utilized by many once local businesses to expand to the international business market has not been explored very much. There is a considerable expectation that most of the businesses that are local and that later on expanded globally to fetch new international business markets followed certain theme in their international business strategy. It is clear that the successful local businesses which expanded globally achieved these global expansion milestones only in the presence and implementation of an international business strategy. We aim to identify the underlying business strategy that is responsible for the successful internationalization of local businesses.

Literature review

The literature on international business and international business strategies is replete with strategies that are utilized by international businesses to conduct business globally. There is no dearth of information regarding the international business strategy and those strategies and operations that are used by multi-national corporations (MNCs).

A review of the literature indentifies that firms have multiple international strategies in place. These are those firms that were never local. Instead, these firms were truly global and even started internationally. These firms did start with local operations and then moved into other global markets with the international expansion strategies. These were then supplemented by international business strategies. However, most of these firms start big and then become even bigger and more global (Verbeke, 2009).

In addition, it is argued that there are many emerging markets in the world. These markets mostly exist in the third-world countries. Further, these emerging markets are very lucrative for multi-national companies and for businesses of the Western world that are looking for internationalization. Consequently, most of the Western world businesses have taken to explore these emerging markets and have set international business strategies to gain from these emerging economies and international markets (Jansson, 2007).

Also, it is clear that the international strategic management process is a bit different from the traditional business strategic management. The international strategic management process is employed by truly international firms. Then, these firms formulate and implement international business strategies following a framework for international business strategy formulation and execution.
