Dynamics of Medical Innovations Case studies from Dynamics of University-Hospital- Industry interactions in UK

Abstract

The field of medical science and public healthcare come across several challenges that are beyond having access to diagnostics, drugs and progressive technologies from organizations that develop them. There are various challenges in the interaction among several actors of system of medical innovation. This research will identify the dynamics of interaction among several factors, actors, mechanisms and institutes that are involved in the activities closely associated with the development, use and dissemination of these innovations. Moreover, this study will try to identify the role of main actor and it will characterise the drivers of innovation and formats of organizations. Furthermore, this study will shed light on intricate and dynamic associations among multiple institutes involved in innovations of medical life and the way they affect public health systems and medical innovations. In addition, this study will identify how these dynamic associations affect the wider policy implications for innovation in medical science.

Chapter 01- Introduction

Innovation in medical science is broadly defines as developing new drugs, clinical practices and medical technology that have been launched over the time for the improvement of healthcare (Consoli and Mina 2009). The field of medical innovations has been under the great attention of researchers and policy makers in the period of late 1990s to the first ten years of 21st century. Moreover, with the time significant efforts have been placed to identify the factors, actors, mechanisms and institutes that are involved in the activities of innovation closely associated with development, use and dissemination of these innovative technologies and practices.

In the year 2005, Galloui & Djellal provided a comprehensive definition of innovation in medical science with a clear classification with respect to constitution of products and services dimensions of innovation in medical science. According to them medical innovation is as follows:

It is the development of new drugs with new pharmaceutical and biochemical compounds and these are classified as Bio-pharmacological or bio-medical innovations.

New systems of technology, system of biological analysis, diagnostic kits, and development of remedial equipments are called Tangible medical innovations.

Designing processes, modes of delivery of healthcare services, designing tactics in the innovation of healthcare system is termed as intangible medical innovation.

The recent research of Nelson & Morlacchi (2011) have identified that from the start of 21st century, there have been an increasing transformation from the research of innovations in bio-pharmacology for the comprehension of intangible and tangible dimension of healthcare innovations. The present literature on the main factors that are associated with processes of innovations shows that the picture of healthcare innovation is increasingly intricate and definitely shows a variation from the linear simpler model of innovation in medical science.

Purpose of the study

This study will investigate the denser collaboration of network on main actors of medical science innovation system. The following section sheds light on the background of the research. In addition, this study will identify how these dynamic associations affect the wider policy implications for innovation in medical ...
