Research Proposal in Mistreatment of Nursing Home Patients

Introduction

Review of existing literature

Industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology justifies the study of workplace behavior. Frank and Lillian Gilbreth were the pioneers of I-O psychology. I-O psychologists frequently relate the gist of this psychology to maximizing workplace productivity, selecting most suitable personnel and product verification. There is a lot more research on creating and explaining an interface between hospitals and care homes. Yet, residential homes are the unexplored area in terms of extensive research. Residents go into hospitalization due to some sever infections or any other need base hospital attention (by Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 2008). A patient is lying in a bed, has his least demands (seemingly a lot) for care of at least turning him over in the bed and treating him like the most needed person.

For catering to such needs, there are trained professionals whose job is to give utmost care (Collins, Wolf, Bell and Evanoff, 2004). The expectations of people regarding health care are changing. Even old adults are some what more aware about their disease and needs than before. We can not call old adults as expert patients, since they do not enjoy the required level of autonomy as compared to adults (Tesfamicael Ghebrehiwet, 2011). Nurses need to go inside the skin of the patient (old adults) to engage in a dialogue and hence, establish a relationship. As Terrell and Miller (2008) state that non-availability of physician evaluation, laboratory tests, therapies lead a resident to Emergency department. Nursing homes usually do have on-site evaluation and management. The whole lapse enlarges the risk factor of the residents for subjecting to unfortunate and hazardous treatment. Emergency department and nursing homes function independent of each other. This causes an absence of co-ordination and continuity of health care. Poor execution of transitions also results in the increase of the cost of care.

I/O psychology evokes productivity in workers, training and their assessment. It deals in improvising human factors. It deploys the energy and application to capitalize the work force productivity and meet the goals of an organization. According to Kozlowski (2012) motivation level varies day to day. Strong criteria of judgement can see its implications. Evidence like changes in behaviour and task performance can display the motivation level in a worker. On the contrary, motivation level is also related to the knowledge and skills of a worker. The initiation to asking question to learn and update oneself shows the passion to stay in an organization. I-O researchers utilize both quantitative and qualitative research methods. It works with the HR of the organization like employee selection system and recruitment ...
